Gourmet or artisanal burgers, a good decade-old hype of elevating the McDonalds standard that went hand-in-hand with micro-brewery hype. Because… who doesn’t like a good burger?

But if you ask ten people about the best burger in Berlin, you’ll likely get ten different answers. Since I haven’t tried every burger in Berlin, I did some old-school research and looked at different sources. What does the community think? How about food critics and magazines?

The result is a list of the 34 most notable burger restaurants. Is it possible some are missing or actually should not be on the list? Sure. Do let me know which.

Let’s dive in.

Top-rated Burger spots in Berlin: a quick overview

  • Reddit (r/berlin) community: Burgermeister
  • Berlin Food Stories: Goldies
  • Mit Vergnügen: Goldies at position 1 (but probably not ranking)
  • Falstaff: Goldies
  • Handpicked Berlin: Shiso and Martha’s

r/berlin is often my source of inspiration, and this post is no different. I went through the post at the beginning of October, picked the five most upvoted comments, and took the liberty of adding Martha’s, which was also in the top 10 but had Burgermeister attached. Here is the list:

  1. **Burgermeister (**11 locations + 5 coming soon)
  2. Burgeramt (Krossener Str.)
  3. Kumpel & Keule (Markthalle Neun)
  4. Shiso Burger (4 locations)
  5. Rebel Room (Seestr.)
  6. Martha’s (Mehringdamm)

The most upvoted comment was rightfully this one: “Before everyone starts to whine, yeah, Burgermeister quality definitely went down in recent years, but it is still one of the best”. I agree. It’s a solid burger.

After making a r/berlin list, I figured it would be great to cross-check the Google ratings, and they tell a slightly different story (for multiple locations, I took the one with the highest number):

  1. Martha’s - 4.7 ⭐ (950 reviews)
  2. Burgermeister - 4.6 ⭐ (15,483)
  3. Kumpel & Keule - 4.6 ⭐ (203)
  4. Rebel Room - 4.5 ⭐ (1,311)
  5. Shiso Burger - 4.4 ⭐ (5,187)
  6. Burgeramt - 4.4 ⭐ (5,035)

After I posted this reel, I received a few “wtf” comments and a few constructive suggestions from people on the internet. So, here are the ones from the comments, sorted by the number of ratings on Google Maps (as of 9th of November, the highest-rated location):

  1. rembrandt-burger - 4.5 ⭐ (3,461)
  2. Smack Burger - 4.6 ⭐ (1,524 ) - 2 locations
  3. BurgerVision - 4.1 ⭐ (1,073) - 10 locations
  4. VEG’D - 4.7 ⭐ (845) - 4 locations
  5. Hirsch & Eber - 4.5 ⭐ (616)
  6. DR BURGER - 4.8 ⭐ (441)

Best burgers in Berlin according to Handpicked Berlin

My current favourites are Shiso (special Asian takes on burgers, small but very tasty) and Martha’s (better than Burgermeister across the road).

Burgermeister, the OG of the Berlin Burger scene, proves that several locations will almost necessarily mean lower quality. The burger is still solid, but fries can really be hit or miss.

Goldies is good, but only if there are no big queues. Same with Munchies (not really burgers, but patty melts, but they also have OKC Smash).

Expert reviews of burgers in Berlin: what do food critics and magazines say

Berlin Food Stories’ top Berlin burger picks

Per at BFS recently published an article that you should definitely read with detailed descriptions of 12 burger joints that made the cut from the 50 (!) tested ones.

His top 3 are Goldies (4.5/5), Golt’z Burger (4.4/5), Königsburger at Ritz Carlton (4.4/5).

The rest on the list: ALL IN. (4.3/5), Burgermeister (4.2/5), Smashy n’ Crunchy (4.2/5), Burgerstrasse (4.0/5), Five Guys (4.0/5), Sold Out Burger (3.9/5), Gully Burger (3.9/5), Veronika (3.9/5), and Pound & Pence (3.9/5)

Falstaff’s top Berlin burger picks

Culinary magazine Falstaff also has a list of 11 burger joints. Their top 3 are:

  1. Goldies (95)
  2. Hirsch & Eber (94)
  3. BBI (93)

Followed by: Shiso Burger (93), ALL IN. (91), House of Burgerz (91), Windburger (91), Burger Turm (90), Burgeramt (90), Burgermeister (90), Pound & Pence (90), Martha’s (89), Tommi’s Burger Joint (88).

Mit Vergnügen’s top Berlin burger picks

I don’t think their list equals rankings, but the first three on the list of 11 are:

  1. Goldies
  2. Gully Burger
  3. Tommi’s Burger Joint

The rest on the list: Burgermeister, Smack Burger, Jolee’s, Son Kitchen, Shiso Burger, The Bird, Neue Republik Reger and Grindhouse.

Complete list of notable Berlin’s burger restaurants featured in selected articles and on Reddit [2024]

*if they have more than 2 locations I listed one + added “various”
**no website, expired - seems like things changed in the oranisation, their last FB post is also ancient

Methodology: Price categories are based on the starting price of each restaurant’s basic burger (€: up to €8, €€: €8.1-€11, €€€: €11+). Data was collected online on November 9th and is without any guarantees!

Conclusion: Which is the best burger in Berlin in 2024?

If you’ve made it this far, you’ve probably noticed a pattern: certain names keep popping up across different sources. And rightly so!

Goldies emerges as the clear critic’s favourite, getting top marks from Berlin Food Stories (4.5/5), Falstaff (95/100), and appearing first on Mit Vergnügen’s list. However, I wouldn’t even bother if the queue is too long.

For the authentic Berlin burger experience, Burgermeister at Schlesisches Tor (the original toilet location) remains a solid choice. While the quality might have dipped with expansion, it’s still a Berlin institution and delivers a reliably good burger. Tell them to “please do a great job with the fries!” Maybe it helps!

I can vouch for Martha’s if you’re looking for consistent quality without the hype. If you’d like to try something different, go for Shiso.

For a special experience, head to Markthalle Neun and try Kumpel & Keule. You’ll get a great burger, enjoy the market hall atmosphere and have the option to try other local delicacies.

It is also true: you probably cannot miss by going to any of the burger restaurants on the list.

In short:

  • Best overall quality: Goldies
  • Best value: Martha’s
  • Best experience: Kumpel & Keule at Markthalle Neun
  • Most iconic: Burgermeister (Schlesisches Tor in a former toilet)
