After finishing Shantaram in German (3/5), I ran a story on my Instagram asking my followers for German fiction recommendations. I have received several responses for good novels and promised I will share the results with everyone.
Here is the list of book recommendations:
- Small World by Martin Suter
- Die dunkle Seite des Mondes by Martin Suter
- Ein ganzes Leben by Robert Seethaler
- Der Trafikant by Robert Seethaler
- Russendisko by Wladimir Kaminer
- Ach, diese Lücke, diese entsetzliche Lücke by Joachim Meyerhoff (I watched the movie and it’s good!)
- Unter Leuten by Juli Zeh
- Spieltrieb by Juli Zeh
- Nullzeit by Juli Zeh
- Der Große Garten by Lola Randl
- Ansichten eines Clowns by Heinrich Böll
- Gruppenbild mit Dame by Heinrich Böll
- Der Vorleser by Bernhard Schlink
- Wenn ich nicht Urlaub mache, macht es jemand anderes by Giulia Becker
- Wild wuchern by Katharina Köller
- Schönwald by Philipp Oehmke
- Für Polina by Takis Würger
My recommendations:
- Herr Lehmann by Sven Regener (Set in Kreuzberg, West Berlin, in the months just before the Wall fell in 1989. A story of a bartender drifting through his daily life. It was adapted into a film, which I haven’t seen.)
- For everyone learning German: Le grand cahier (Das große Heft) by Ágota Kristóf, it’s a very weird but interesting book narrated by kids, so it’s an easy read (Slavoj Žižek’s article about it).
Thank you, everyone!
